Making Stuff

I am filming some make videos for the Utah Arts Festival. Here are a few and some of my recent favorite Makers this week. Not too many crazy people. I need to step it up though.

It's called Perfect Binding, also Kim Martinez teaches Art at the U of Utah told me about using thrifted art as book covers. That was the BEST idea ever.

This is a resin Solar System. I used beads, embossing powder, a knitting stitch marker, fish tank rocks and alcohol ink. The circle is made out of lasercut 1/2" plywood and paint.

How I cast a headband for faceshields. This is ppe. I wanted to increase production of them. One 3d printed headband and bottom piece prints in 4-5 hours. Liquid urethane plastic can cure in 20-20  minutes. I just got beat by injection molding, 3 seconds. The injection molding and liquid plastic are about $1 each and the 3d printed version is about $0.20.

In this video you can see a tiny Thanos gauntlet. He makes really small cool things.

He uses large bolts and nuts to make things like this.

I can't tell if his background is in toymaking or propmaking. Either way he knows what he's doing. His work is impressive.

He does woodcarving of animals. Also some little cups and random objects and fantasy creatures.

This website summarizes the story of William Kamkwamba born into a poor family in Malawi. He stole engineering books from the school library and taught himself how to build a wind turbine which brought water to the drought stricken village. He later built more and gave everyone electricity. There is a movie version on Netflix you should watch.

Your Turn

Print off designs and create a city.

Make an articulated hand with supplies you have at home.

You probably don't have enough on hand but if you are bored and have the time and money. Send me pictures. This is a pretty popular activity on Instructables.

Using popsicle sticks, rubberbands, glue and zipties. I thought this was really clever.

I love these little notebooks you can carry around with you.
